What is E-Hentai?
E-Hentai is a free doujinshi and hentai manga archive, community-maintained since 2007, holding an enormous volume of material across languages — Japanese originals, English scanlations, Chinese and Korean translations, artist CG sets, and Western work alongside them.
It is the deepest archive of its kind and it is not close.
Why is the archive so much deeper than the alternatives?
Because it has been accepting uploads for nearly twenty years and deletes almost nothing. nHentai is better organised and Hitomi.la has better search, but both are smaller. Material that exists nowhere else — obscure circles, one-off releases, work whose creators stopped publishing a decade ago — is here because someone uploaded it in 2011 and nothing removed it.
For anything genuinely rare, this is the answer, and often the only one.
What is the legal position?
Unlicensed throughout. This is fan-scanned and fan-translated work distributed without the artists' permission, and the artists are not paid. FAKKU, reviewed in this directory, is the licensed alternative and the contrast between them is the clearest in this whole category.
We list this because it is the primary archive of a format and omitting it would make the directory useless. We are not going to describe it as anything other than what it is.
What did we measure?
A 432ms response on a 61KB document — fast and light. The document declares lang="en" and, notably, no mobile viewport: the page does not adapt to a phone screen, which on a manga reader is a real problem rather than a cosmetic one.
Our scan detected the JuicyAds advertising network in the page source, and found none of the four compliance documents. Recorded as unconfirmed, though on a 61KB page with plenty of HTML there was room for footer links to appear.
What is the interface like?
Genuinely old. Dense tables, small type, a layout from the mid-2000s and a search syntax you have to learn. There is no onboarding and there never has been.
The gallery reader is functional and no more. On a phone, with no viewport declared, it is worse than functional.
What about the ExHentai side?
There is a companion archive with a wider scope, reachable only under specific account conditions that are deliberately obscure. We are not going to write a guide to it; what matters for a review is that the main site is what most people will use and what we measured.
Should you use it?
For depth, yes, and for anything rare there is no alternative. For reading comfort, nHentai's reader is far better and FAKKU's is better still. Use this when the others do not have it, which will happen more often than you expect.
