What is Gelbooru?
Gelbooru is a community-tagged image board for anime and manga artwork, running since the mid-2000s. It uses the booru model — every upload tagged by character, series, artist and content, with search built from combining and excluding tags — and covers both explicit and non-explicit work in one index.
It is older than most of the boards people name first.
How does it differ from Rule34.xxx?
Scope. Rule34.xxx is explicit-only by definition; Gelbooru indexes the whole spectrum of anime and manga art, with explicit content as a subset rather than the premise.
That matters more than it sounds. A character's art exists on a continuum, and a board that only indexes one end of it fragments the record — an artist's work gets split across boards by content rating rather than kept together. Gelbooru keeps it together, which makes it the better tool for following an artist or a series rather than a tag.
Is the tagging as good?
Comparable, and built on the same community model. Tags combine, exclude and sort; saved searches and blacklists work with an account. Coverage of currently popular series is fast, and coverage of obscure ones is uneven — the same shape as every community-tagged archive.
The blacklist feature is worth knowing about specifically: on a board that indexes everything, filtering what you do not want to see is more necessary than on an explicit-only board.
What did we measure?
A 646ms response on a 3KB document — a very fast response on an almost empty page. The 3KB is the giveaway: this is a JavaScript application shell that assembles the interface after load.
The document declares a mobile viewport but carries no lang attribute. Our scan detected no advertising network and confirmed terms of service only; 2257, DMCA and privacy did not surface, which on a 3KB shell is expected rather than informative. Recorded as unconfirmed.
What is the interface like?
Utilitarian, like every booru. A query box, a dense thumbnail grid, and the assumption that you already know the tag syntax. That is the category convention and the audience prefers it.
The learning curve is the same hour it is on any booru, and it pays off the same way.
Should you use it?
If you want anime and manga art indexed as a whole rather than split by content rating, this is the better board, and the artist and series coverage is the reason. If you only want explicit work, Rule34.xxx is more focused and its community is larger.
